I’m so excited to invite you to watch my Peony Watercolor Class, available on YouTube!

Peonies are amazing aren't they? Such a short lived flower, but they aren't easily forgotten. I'd love to show you my process for bringing them to life, anytime of the year. :) SowWhether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started on your watercolor journey, this class will guide you step by step in creating a stunning peony, from start to finish! Feel free to pause the video as needed to reference the sketch and reference.

Stay in the loop!

I create tutorials regularly — If you'd like to keep learning with me, give me your email below, and I'll keep you updated.

What You’ll Need:

To make the most of the class, gather the following supplies:

  • Paints: (use what you have — They don't have to be the exact same as me)

    • Quinacridone Red (or alizarin crimson or opera rose)

    • Ultramarine Blue (or any other crisp blue)

    • Winsor Red (or any other true red)

    • Green Gold (I used Daniel Smith, but my other colors are winsor and newton)

  • Brushes:

    • Size 8 and 6 round brush (I'm using an aqua elite long round and series 7 from winsor and newton) I recommend having a few round brushes available!

  • Paper:

    • Cold press watercolor paper! I'll use a sheet that is approximately 5x7. Be sure to use real watercolor paper — It makes a huge difference!

  • Sketch: Download the sketch reference provided below and sketch it out ahead of time. (Trust me, getting the sketch right first will help you SO much!)

What to Expect:

Here’s a glimpse of my painting process:

  1. Underwash: We’ll begin with a light underwash to establish the lightest colors and create the basic shape of our peony. This will be the lightest part of the painting process.

  2. Form Development: Gradually, we’ll layer colors to create depth and dimension. We work layer upon layer to add form and detail to our painting. The darkest colors are saved for the end.

  3. Details: Finally, we’ll add those intricate and dark details that bring the peony to life and make it pop off the page!

There's no wrong way to watch this lesson — You’re welcome to watch just to enjoy a soothing painting process, or paint along with me!

How to Prepare:

Looking forward to seeing what you create! I can't wait to create something beautiful together! 🌸

Love,

Shealeen
